School Characteristics

Edgewater High School (EHS) is a public, four-year comprehensive high school located close to the downtown area of Orlando. EHS is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges and by the Florida Department of Education. Edgewater was built in 1951 and in its first year had a student population of 912. Enrollment for the 2006-2007 school year is 2600 students, of which 530 are seniors. According to the Senior Exit Survey, over eighty-five percent of EHS graduates have plans to attend a post-secondary institution upon graduation. This percentage has remained consistent over the past few years.

We have 160 instructors on staff, with almost fifty percent of the faculty having earned a Master’s degree or higher. The teachers have an average of fifteen years experience in education. Edgewater currently has ten Nationally Board Certified teachers.

The class sizes range from an average of 22 students in Language Arts classes to 26 students in Social Studies classes. We are below the district and state averages in Language Arts classes.

Edgewater operates on a ten-month system with two semesters, each made up of two nine-week sessions. Students earn one credit for each yearlong subject passed. One-half credit is earned for each semester-length course that is passed. The school day is six periods long with each period lasting fifty-seven minutes. Students must earn twenty-four credits in a combination of required and elective courses and must achieve a minimum grade point average of 2.0 in order to graduate. Students in the graduating class of 2006 will also be required to pass the FCAT to receive a diploma.
