Resources for Finding Information on Any Subject

Books

1. The 46 computers in the media center help you find a book by author, subject, title, keyword or AR level.

2. If you cannot find information on a subject, ask Ms. Burnett or another staff member.

3. We have 23,000+ books in the Media Center organized by the Dewey Decimal System. The following letters appear as the first letter in a book's call number:
R = Reference book - short shelves
B = Biography - life story of one person
F = Fiction, novel
Par = Parrish collection, located near the couches
A = Ask for these at the circulation desk
PB = Paperback fiction
SC = Story collection - several short stories in one book
AV = Audio-visual - video, DVD, etc.

4. We have 135+ books-on-tape and books-on-CD available for check out.

Magazine Articles

1. http://mediacenter.ocps.net has many databases with full text (word for word) articles.

2. The Readers' Guide books are opposite the circulation desk. Individuals may look for their subjects in these large green books. Each book covers a different year. The paperback Readers' Guides cover the current year. Each Readers' Guide is an index to magazine articles about all subjects. The subjects are in alphabetical order. We keep 8,051 magazines for 10 years.

3. Individuals may check out four magazines for a week. There is a 25 cents fine per day for late returns.

5. The Magazine List is printed on blue paper. It lists the periodicals (magazines and newspapers) our media center has available in paper format. To access it on this website Click here.

6. EHS students may read magazine articles on their home computers. Just click here. The password may be obtained from any LMC staff member.

Newspaper Articles

1. Newspaper articles may be found by using the Infotrac subscription database or http://mediacenter.ocps.net.

2. Vertical Files - these four drawer filing cabinets contain 2,400 subject folders arranged alphabetically. Folders contain pamphlets, pictures, newspaper and/or magazine articles.

3. Twentieth Century America (Reference 973.92 Twe) is a set of 20 books of newspaper articles from the Associated Press, in chronological order. Reference 071 has a few books containing the first page of The New York Times for the last 150 years.

CDs and DVDs

The media center has CDs and DVDs that may be checked out overnight. They are listed in the library catalog by author, subject or title.

Audio-Visuals (A-V)

To find a video or DVD on a subject, go to http://destiny.ocps.net. Click on edgewater > catalog > power. Write DVD in the first space, video in the next space, and you subject in the bottom space. Click search.

Occupational Outlook Handbook is published every year by the U.S. Department of Labor, 2 pages per career. It's available in most school libraries, bookstores, and for free online at: www.bls.gov/oco/home.htm

Career Information Center, 13 volume set, 2-3 pages per career, divided by category (transportation, medical...)

Encyclopedia of Careers and Vocational Guidance, 4 volumes, 4-6 pages per career

Career World is a useful magazine from the Weekly Reader series, for grades 6-10, published 6x a year, tells how various middle and high school courses impact future job choices.

Valencia Community College charges $25. for their career inventory that includes Holland, Myers-Briggs and Career Exploration.
