Underdog Evans climbs to top

Evans guard Kedric Taylor was all smiles. His team hasn't earned many accolades this season, but the Trojans (23-7) are rumbling into the Class 6A region finals thanks to a 54-42 win over Edgewater (19-11) on the Eagles' home floor Tuesday.

"We like being underdogs," Taylor said giddily after the win. "People don't have to pay attention to us, and we can just keep sneaking up on them."

It wasn't a pretty start for either team. The first half was marred by turnovers and missed opportunities. Taylor paced Evans with seven points, but the Trojans trailed Edgewater 21-19 at the half.

"We talked about being patient and spreading the floor to take advantage of our strengths," Evans Coach Tyrhon Crawford said. "We knew if we were patient, we could be successful."

Evans' biggest strength was Taylor, who proved to be a playmaker for the Trojans and too versatile of a scoring threat for Edgewater's defense. Taylor poured in 15 second-half points, finishing with a game-high 22.

The Trojans also came up big at the free-throw line, hitting 17-of-21 from the line in the fourth quarter. The steady free-throw shooting helped Evans outscore Edgewater 22-12 in the final period.

"Our coaches stop every practice a couple of times for 10 or 15 minutes so we can just shoot free throws," Taylor said. "Free throws are a big deal for us, and they helped us win a big game."

Darryl James led Edgewater with 20 points. Angel Burke added 13 points for Evans, which hosts Plant City (17-9) Saturday night.

Edgewater Coach Jeremy Lavoie knew what his team needed to do against the bigger Evans' squad after their regular-season loss to the Trojans on Dec. 11.

"We achieved our goal this time — solid defense and rebounding," Lavoie said.

The Eagles beat Evans 61-41 in the Class 6A, District 5 championship game at home Saturday.

Both teams move on to the regional tournament beginning Thursday. Edgewater will play at home while Evans will play on the road.

Edgewater (18-10) had the largest run of the game in the first quarter. The Eagles scored 13 unanswered points and gained an 18-10 advantage going into the second quarter. It was enough to distance themselves for the remainder of the game.

Evans (20-7) came back within seven in the second quarter but lacked a presence underneath and came down with only one offensive rebound in the quarter. A buzzer-beating jumper just inside the arc by Kendrick Perry gave Edgewater a 33-21 going into the half.

Perry led all scorers with 15 points.

Edgewater came out in the second half with the same intensity and had a 14-4 run to start the third quarter. That put the score at 48-25, enough distance for the Eagles to control the clock in the fourth.

Edgewater had two players with double-digit rebounds. Alix Petitfrere finished with 11 rebounds and 11 points and Ben Parker had 10 rebounds.

"We boxed out well," Lavoie said. "It was key against such a big [Evans] squad."
