Graduation Requirements

In 2003, the State of Florida began requiring that schools provide students and parents the opportunity to select from three high school graduation programs the one that best prepares the individual student for his/her chosen post secondary path:

  • Four-year, 24 credit standard preparatory program
  • Three-year, 18 credit standard college preparatory program
  • Three-year, 18 credit career preparatory program

Each program:

  • Requires that the student be enrolled for a minimum of three full years
  • Permits progress toward an associate’s degree through dual enrollment
  • Meets Bright Futures requirements for at least one of the awards
  • Meets minimum Florida state university system requirements

The new three-year options are designed for students who are clear on their future goals, possess the maturity to leave high school in a shortened timeframe and feel they are ready to pursue their goals beyond high school in an accelerated manner. The three-year options are only for students pursuing a standard diploma.

Each spring, students in grades 9-11 will be able to indicate their choice of graduation options. Students who select one of the three-year options and are unable to complete those requirements including passing the FCAT in three years will then be required to complete all of the requirements under the standard 24 credit program.

For all options:
One credit is equal to one full year of a subject; one-half credit equals one-half year. To receive an academic diploma and participate in graduation ceremonies, the student must:

  • Earn the minimum required credits in grades 9-12 as indicated
  • Have an unweighted grade point average (GPA) 2.0 for grades 9-12
  • Be in attendance on a full time basis for a minimum of 8 semesters in grades 9-12 (6 semesters for 18 credit option)
  • Successfully pass the FCAT
  • Successfully pass Algebra I or Algebra IA and Algebra IB

Check with your counselor about waivers and substitutions for PE requirements.
